General:
Perennial herb from a bundle of spindle-shaped fleshy roots; stems attached below ground, 4-10 cm tall.

Leaves:
Basal leaves 3-times compound, long-stalked, the lobes 1-2 times deeply divided, the ultimate segments linear to oblanceolate, 1-4 mm wide, rounded, glabrous, with a bloom; stems leaves lacking.

Flowers:
Inflorescence a solitary flower; corollas white to purple, heart-shaped at the base; outer petals forming a pouch; inner petals erect, purplish-tipped, 12-15 mm long.

Fruits:
Capsules, egg-shaped to elliptic, 10-13 mm long; seeds about 1.2 mm long, black, shiny.

Habitat / Range

Mesic to dry meadows and scree slopes in the montane and subalpine zones; rare E of the Coast-Cascade Mountains in SW and SC BC; S to WY, UT and CA.
